(670 The Score) The Cubs are adding some depth to their bullpen, acquiring right-hander Jose Cuas from the Royals in exchange for outfielder Nelson Velazquez.
Cuas, 29, has a 4.54 ERA over 41 2/3 innings of work this season with the Royals. He has a 4.08 ERA over 92 career appearances, all for Kansas City.
Velazquez, 24, hit .241 with three home runs and six RBIs over 13 games this season.
The Cubs also acquired third baseman Jeimer Candelario from the Nationals on Monday in exchange for two minor-league prospects.
The Cubs have made both deals official. Corresponding roster moves will follow at a later time.
The Cubs host the Reds on Monday for the start of a four-game series at Wrigley Field.
MLB's trade deadline is 5 p.m. CT Tuesday.
