(Audacy) The Cubs and the Mets have had conversations about a trade that could be the biggest deal in MLB ahead of the deadline next Tuesday should it be completed.

The deal would send Cubs catcher Willson Contreras and closer David Robertson to the Mets in exchange for prospects, Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated reported.

The Mets' top two prospects -- catcher Francisco Alvarez and third baseman/outfielder Brett Baty -- aren't on the table, Ragazzo reported, but the Cubs could still potentially get a respectable return of prospects for Contreras and Robertson, both of whom are set to become free agents after the season.

Contreras, 30, was the an All-Star this year for the third time in his career, and he remains one of the better catchers in baseball. He had 14 homers and an .847 OPS entering play Tuesday. Given that Alvarez -- the No. 2 prospect in baseball -- is at Triple-A, Contreras would likely just be a rental. But he'd get a chance to join a Mets team that's 59-37 and seems like a legitimate World Series contender.

A longtime Yankee, Robertson has revived his career at the age of 37. He has a 1.83 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 35 appearances this season. While he's been the closer for the Cubs, he would become a setup man for Mets closer Edwin Díaz if traded to New York.
