CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — After two people were struck by gunfire at Guaranteed Rate Field on Friday night, Chicago police leadership said Monday it’s unlikely that the shots came from outside of the stadium, as some have speculated.
Although interim Chicago Police Supt. Fred Waller wouldn't say exactly where the gunshots came from — or specify what led to the shooting — he did say investigators are narrowing down the possibilities.
“We’re dispelling a lot of things,” Waller said. “This coming from outside is something that we’ve almost completely dispelled, but we’re still looking at every avenue. It’s still under investigation.”
Waller’s comments came after the police department’s latest graduation and promotion ceremony at Navy Pier. Police are exploring every possibility and following every lead, Waller said.
One woman suffered a leg wound, and another appeared to have been grazed by a bullet in the shooting.
Both women, ages 42 and 26, were expected to recover from the shooting, which occurred during the Oakland Athletics’ 12-4 victory over the White Sox.
At one point, Waller said police did ask the White Sox to halt the game, but it continued to its conclusion.
Mayor Brandon Johnson said he was made aware of the shooting shortly after it occurred Friday, but he declined to say whether he was part of the decision to allow the game to continue or whether, in hindsight, that was the right choice.
“Obviously, this is an ongoing investigation and the Chicago Police Department has done a remarkable job of gathering all the evidence and as more information becomes available, that information will be reported,” Johnson said.
