(670 The Score) White Sox manager Tony La Russa is aiming to return to the dugout next week, Jon Heyman of the New York Post and Audacy Sports reported Thursday afternoon.

The 77-year-old La Russa has been on a medical leave of absence since Aug. 30, when he left Guaranteed Rate Field about an hour before game time on the advice of his doctors. He then traveled to Arizona to have an extensive medical checkup by his personal physicians.

The White Sox haven’t specified La Russa’s health issue, but reports have indicated he underwent heart testing. The White Sox also haven’t updated La Russa’s health status since the initial announcement that he was stepping aside indefinitely.

La Russa is “going to be OK,” friends of his told Heyman.

The White Sox are 6-3 in La Russa’s absence and have clawed within two games of the first-place Guardians in the AL Central race. Miguel Cairo has served as the acting manager in La Russa's absence.

Chicago opens a four-game series at Oakland on Thursday evening. After that, the White Sox have an off day Monday and then host the Rockies at Guaranteed Rate Field on Tuesday.
