BUFFALO (WBEN) - New York State GOP Chairman Nick Langworthy is calling on the New York State Assembly to expeditiously file articles of impeachment against Governor Andrew Cuomo.
"He has no intention of resigning this office, and any politician that you talk to today that says, 'Well, I'm going to call for his resignation,' that's just hollow words," said Langworthy at a press conference in Buffalo Wednesday morning. "It's time for action. That time is over for calling for resignation. It is time for this impeachment to move, and it is time for it to move now."
According to Politico, the process of impeachment is extremely rare in New York State, with only one of the state's 56 governors having ever been impeached and removed from office, and that was back in the early 20th Century.
Impeachment requires the support of a simple majority vote with the State Assembly. The case would then go to a High Court of Impeachment, which includes all state senators, except the majority leader, and the seven members New York's Court of Appeals. Two-thirds of this 69-person body, or 46 members, would then have to vote to convict for the governor to be removed.
"This is a very dark day in the State of New York," said Langworthy. "But the silver lining to this cloud is that we're finally getting closer to justice."
