Amherst Police investigating Friday accident on I-290 involving school bus

All five students were transported to Oishei Children's Hospital for evaluation, while a bus aide was taken to ECMC with serious injuries

Amherst, N.Y. (WBEN) - The Amherst Police Department is investigating a traffic accident involving a school bus on the I-290 Eastbound on Friday morning between Harlem Road and Main Street.

At approximately 7:42 a.m. ET, a pick up truck had reportedly swerved while merging and sent a First Student Bus transporting five students who were going to the Cantalician Center in Cheektowaga into the ditch just past the Harlem Road exit.

All five students were transported to Oishei Children's Hospital for evaluation, but it is believed none of their injuries are life-threatening. The names and ages of the students will not be released but their families have all been notified.

WBEN has since learned all five children have been released from the hospital.

The driver of the bus was evaluated at the scene, while the aide on the bus was transported to Erie County Medical Center with serious injuries. The identity of the injured bus aide is not being released at this time so that proper notifications can be made.

Meanwhile, the driver of the pickup truck was also evaluated at the scene, but was not transported to the hospital.

The Amherst Police Department sends their thanks to the Snyder Fire Department, Twin City Ambulance Co, and AMR for their assistance and treatment of the victims at the scene. The New York State Deptartment of Transportation also assisted with traffic control at the scene.
