Cheektowaga, N.Y. (WBEN) - It has been speculated for weeks that migrants from New York City were, at some point, going to be transported upstate and bound for housing in Erie County.

WBEN has learned that around 60 migrants from New York City are set to be bused to Cheektowaga sometime Thursday afternoon and arriving at a local hotel later in the night.

While there has been no further confirmation given at this time, it is speculated this is the first wave of migrants from Downstate that will be making their way to Western New York.

As Gov. Hochul pointed out on Monday during a visit to Buffalo, the decision to send migrants from New York City to Western New York comes from Mayor Eric Adams.

"They have alerted other counties there may be individuals coming. I know there's more welcoming communities than others, and certainly Erie County, our County Executive has indicated his desire and willingness to be helpful, and I'm so grateful for that. That, to me, is really a more a reflection of who we are as New Yorkers to be welcoming to these individuals," said the Governor. "There could be individuals coming, but I don't have confirmation. But we've encouraged the City of New York to always do the appropriate outreach in advance so communities are aware, they can prepare."
