Buffalo, NY (WBEN) As Governor Hochul officially announced $61 million for the Central Terminal, another nearby landmark is getting state funding. The Broadway Market is putting $37 million in state funding to use.

Kathy Peterson with the Broadway Market says a plan was done through Empire State Development and released a year ago for a new plan for the Broadway Market. She says the ultimate goal is to update the market. "It already is a regional destination different times during the year and certainly neighborhood food market throughout the year. It's to really bring an upgrade, bring new vendors in, redo the outside, redo the inside, with probably an elevator and a freight elevator and upgrades to vendor spaces, new vendors to come in" says Peterson.

Peterson says this will blend in well with the money for the Central Terminal, another key part of the Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood. "The two anchors are the Broadway Market and then the Central Terminal. We're walking distance and a lot of the different plans UB just did a plan last year on how to connect it, more walkable, streetscape and those types of things," says Peterson. She says any improvement to the Broadway Market benefits the Central Terminal and vice versa.

The plan was introduced last year, and Peterson says it's a 3 to 5 year plan. "We hope to do some interior improvements as well as the exterior and over the next year we're hoping to be able to complete some of those is phase one of the overall plan," says Peterson. She says the next steps will be broken into phases over the next few years.

Peterson says the Broadway Market has been well prepared in helping with the temporary food desert in the Jefferson neighborhood following the Tops shooting. "We actually have a Save-a-Lot right inside the Broadway Market, a butcher, the fish market and 5 different restaurants," says Peterson. She says Buffalo Fresh is across the street to also help.
