Tonawanda, N.Y. (WBEN) - Erie County Democratic Party Chairman Jeremy Zellner lives in the city of Tonawanda and is calling out Republican Mayor John White for not closing city government and offices Monday in observance of the national Juneteenth holiday.
"We've got a federal holiday, we've got a state holiday, the county is now observing it," said Zellner during a press briefing Sunday.
Mayor White reportedly indicated closing government wasn't possible due to labor contracts. "I spoke with the president of the AFL-CIO this weekend," said Zellner. "He said any labor leader has not contacted us and said they'd be upset if their members were sent home and observed a holiday."
The city of Tonawanda is holding a Juneteenth commemoration Monday morning at 9am.
"We're at a critical time in this nation's history where this holiday needs to be observed," stated Zellner everywhere.
"It's important," said Zellner.
In a statement released Sunday, Mayor White said, "This is nothing but a grandstand by Mr. Zellner and the City of Tonawanda Democratic Committee."
