Amherst, N.Y. (WBEN) - A child was taken to Oishei Children's Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after being stabbed at the Red Roof Inn on Flint Road in Amherst on Tuesday night.
Police responded to a call about a fight at the hotel at around 5:35 p.m. EST on Tuesday evening.
Two other people, a 32-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man, each sustained injuries, which police classified as "defense wounds".
23-year-old Anghely Llamozas-Perez, who lives at the hotel, was arrested by Amherst Police and has been charged with second degree assault and fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon.
Llamozas-Perez is scheduled to return to court on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 9:30 a.m. EST for a felony hearing. She was held without bail.
If convicted of the highest charge, Llamozas-Perez faces a maximum sentence of up to seven years in prison.
"It's a terrible thing to see. This shouldn't be happening in our community," said Erie County Legislator Lindsay Lorigo with WBEN on Wednesday.
This incident took place at one of three hotels in Erie County that has been housing asylum seekers for more than 18 months.
"We need to have a larger conversation at the County Legislature about the impact that migrants are having on our communities," added Lorigo.
She noted this is not the first case of violence involving asylum seekers in Western New York. There have also been previous sexual abuse cases.
DocGo, the company that has been overseeing care of migrants across the state, recently notified municipalities that any asylum seekers living in hotels, must leave by Dec. 31 when DocGo's contract expires with New York City.
Lorigo says lawmakers have not been told anything yet.
"The contracts are expiring. I don't know if they'll be renewed. We need more communication on this, but unfortunately we're not hearing anything from New York City," she said.
