Buffalo, NY (WBEN) State GOP chairman Nick Langworthy is adding his name to the list of those not happy with the Democrats' bill scheduled for a vote Friday to rescind Governor Cuomo's emergency powers.
Langworthy calls the bill a dirty deal. “We are living in the Twilight Zone when a Governor who is under multiple major scandals gets the legislature to extend his powers,” says Langworthy. "What we are witnessing is the peril of one party rule in New York. There are far too many legislators more worried about protecting their backside or being punished by the governor than they are about standing up for what's right."
Langworthy says every day in the 2021 session, Republicans have been putting forth amendments to strip Cuomo's powers, but Democrats have rejected them. "This deal does not strip the governor of his emergency powers. In fact, somehow, it extends his emergency powers indefinitely until President Biden declares the pandemic over," adds Langworthy. "The deal allows Governor Cuomo to continue making changes to any order that already exists, that impacts every facet of our lives." He calls the bill nothing more than political window dressing.
Langworthy says Democrats want to exploit Cuomo's weakened position to get their "tax and spend" agenda approved in the budget. "It's beyond reprehensible Democrat lawmakers would barter on the lives of 15,000 dead New York seniors and victims of sexual harassment to get what they want," claims Langworthy.
The legislature is expected to vote on this Friday.
