BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - Are you planning to launch fireworks this weekend? New York State has many rules this weekend for those of you planning on celebrating Fourth of July with your own fireworks.
According to Homeland Security and Emergency Services, the state allows for only sparkling devices.
There will certainly be many people who purchase fireworks from Pennsylvania to shoot in their backyards. Historically, there is little enforcement of the fireworks on Fourth of July weekend.
Bill Weimer, Vice President of Phantom Fireworks, urges people to use common sense if shooting fireworks this weekend.
"This is great, wholesome family entertianment when used properly and safely," he said. "This is not an item for drunk Uncle Charlie to fool around in. You should have a sober adult in charge. Children should never, never handle the fireworks."
He said to make sure you have a sufficient distance between the fireworks and people. There should be 35 feet of separation for ground-based products like sparklers. If it's an aerial product, he recommends a minimum of 150 feet. Weimer also said a clean, flat surface like concrete or asphalt is best.
"Gravel is terrible because it can be uneven and tip," he said. "If you're going to shoot the product on grass or gravel, throw down a piece of plywood and make yourself a hard, flat surface on which to shoot the fireworks."
He also said to have water handy, with a hose being the best option.
"You just don't know what's going to happen," he said.
