Man charged with assaulting adminstrator at Drew Magnet School

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - An Illinois man is charged with assaulting an assistant principal of the Drew Magnet School Tuesday, after police say he entered illegally through the Buffalo Museum of Science.

Buffalo Police say they got a call around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday about an unknown white man entering the school through the Buffalo Museum of Science.

Officers say they learned the man approached a young student, then the assistant principal intervened was punched and shoved into a wall. Police say the suspect then ran into the museum, was discovered hiding there and subsequently arrested.

30-year-old Shane Cronin of Lombard, Illinois is facing several charges, including burglary assault and child endangerment.

Buffalo Public Schools issued the following statement:

"On Tuesday, Feb. 11, the Dr. Charles R. Drew Science Magnet PS 59 was placed in a brief shelter in place because of a man entering the school without permission through the museum and subsequently punched and shoved a school administrator when approached. School officials immediately notified the Buffalo Police who responded within minutes and arrested the man. As we anticipated a range of emotions to this incident, our Crisis Support Teams have been onsite to offer counseling and emotional support to anyone wishing to speak to someone. 

"The Buffalo Public Schools thanks the Buffalo Police Department for their swift response and for taking the time to meet with staff Wednesday morning to address any questions or concerns about the incident. As this is a law enforcement investigation, the district is unable to comment further."
