BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) – Governor Kathy Hochul is the early favorite to win the 2022 gubernatorial race, according to a poll released Tuesday by Marist Institute for Public Opinion.
The poll found Hochul was viewed favorably by 55% of New Yorkers, with most saying she’s a “good leader” for the state. She also has the highest favorable rating of the four potential democratic candidates for governor next year.
Governor Andrew Cuomo, who resigned in August following various scandals and an impeachment probe, is not viewed favorably by most New Yorkers.
77% of residents say they do not want him to reclaim the office next year, including 74% of democrats.
“She clearly has established herself with the democrats as governor statewide,” Dr. Lee Miringoff, Director at Marist, said. “The notion that she’s not well known and views of that sort don’t hold up in the numbers.
70-19 is the kind of number you want to go into a primary with.”
Despite positive numbers for Hochul, New Yorkers largely believe the state is going in the wrong direction. 54% believe this while only 39% believe the state is going in the right direction.
