Russo: At-home COVID tests effective

Russo says follow written and video instructions
COVID at-home test

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - What price for instant results?

As at-home tests are being pledged to be sent across Erie County, New York State and the country, many are questioning how effective the at-home tests are.

One local expert tells WBEN if you follow the instructions, the results should be accurate.

UB's Dr. Tom Russo says you should follow the written instructions for accurate results. "Most tests also have a video online to show how to properly use the test and I strongly suggest you to view the video to see that you're doing it properly and the results will be reliable," says Russo.

Russo says almost all at-home tests are rapid antigen tests. "They are less sensitive than PCR tests, but you can get the results often within 15 minutes," says Russo, who adds they can be just as effective as PCR tests.

Russo says if you're symptomatic and test positive, it's likely you have COVID. "If you're symptomatic and test negative, it's still possible you have COVID, and you can either take another test within 12 to 24 hours, or you can arrange to take a PCR test, explains Russo. He says if you're asymptomatic, it's possible the test could lead to a false positive, and in that case, follow up with a PCR test.

Russo says the cost of an at-home test is about $10-15. "If you're symptomatic and you have insurance, then the cost of a PCR test is covered by insurance. If you then go and buy a home test at this time, that's not reimbursable until January when President Biden has a new initiative to expand home testing," says Russo.

Russo strongly suggests using tests if you're having a holiday gathering. "If in particular, someone is vulnerable, not vaccinated, or not yet boosted if eligible, that person could be at considerable risk if they get infected for a serious outcome," adds Russo. He says even though tests aren't perfect, they provide an extra layer of protection.
