Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - The SPCA Serving Erie County is caring for more than 150 farm animals seized from a Town of Cheektowaga garage.
The SPCA was initially tipped off about an animal welfare situation. Chief
Communication Officer Gina Lattuca told WBEN that investigators arrived on scene Thursday at 42 Colton Street and detected an unusual scent coming from the garage.
"When they looked through a window, they saw many animals in the garage. They obtained a warrant and returned to the property. We removed more than 150 farm animals," noted Lattuca.
Seized animals include: At least 117 chickens, 18 ducks, 15 rabbits, two goats, two dogs, one cat, and one pig.
SPCA Chief Investigator Lindsey Wood said the chickens were found crammed into two small makeshift pens, one 3’ x 4’, the other 5′ x 7′. The pens were packed with feces approximately six inches deep.
All of the animals were transported to the SPCA's Harlem Road location.

Lattuca said with an influx like that, the staff kicked into high gear. Some of the animals are at the SPCA's farm. Plans are being made to send others to foster locations until the case is sorted out.
"This is something that is very expensive. We're putting a lot of resources toward a case like this. And it's something that SPCA donors expect of us. Serving Erie County does not just involve dogs and cats. Very often it's farm animals," she added.
Lattuca says animal cruelty charges are pending against property owner Karissa Schmidt. She was issued an appearance ticket for Cheektowaga Town Court Jan. 4, 2024.
In addition to the animals that were found alive, there were multiple deceased animals and body parts from deceased chickens throughout the garage.
Earlier this week, the SPCA conducted a day long radiothon which raised $117,000 to rescue, protect and enhance the lives of all animals in its care.
Lattuca said a lot of people perceive the SPCA as an adoption center.
"Of course we are," she said. "But cruelty cases and animal rescues are a significant part of our work. This is where a large part of our budget is going. That's why these donations are so important, especially since we're funded solely by donations, not tax dollars. We're honored to do work like this."
