Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Medical professionals are reminding residents to get their flu shots this winter, as cases continue to spike in Western New York.

Regional Medical Director at WNY Immediate Care Dr. Joseph Chow explains that it's not uncommon to see spikes in December, as people are indoors and around others more often. The flu season can sometimes start as early as October, and go through the entire winter.

"We take a look frequently at the southern hemisphere and southern states, and I can say that some of the southern states have had certainly a spike in flu cases so many times we take a look there to get an idea if it's coming this way. And it does look like it's starting to pick up a little bit of steam," said Dr. Chow in an interview with WBEN.

Dr. Chow says changes to the virus can not only create larger spikes, but decrease the effectiveness of vaccines. However, the last few years have been fairly moderate.

"It's not too late to really ever get a flu shot. So if you haven't had it, you can certainly get it even right now. Certainly people who are at higher risk, elderly, chronic medical conditions, lung issues, those folks are definitely going to be at a higher risk of complications if they get the flu," he explained.

In addition to getting the flu shot, Dr. Chow recommends wearing a mask when appropriate, getting plenty of sleep, and eating a well rounded diet.

"Keep in mind, there's other viruses too - RSV, COVID and other viruses that are always circulating," Dr. Chow said. "It doesn't necessarily mean it's always the flu. You can have the others, and so that's why, certainly, if you're not feeling well, make sure you seek medical treatment to help determine which one you have."
