BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - In an effort to increase the number of family attractions at Canalside on the Buffalo Waterfront, a 30,000 square foot roller rink will open in August.
"Fall has traditionally been a slower season for us," said Buffalo Waterfront General Manager Lauren Moloney Ford. "We thought this would be a great way to bridge the gap between Summer and when we open the ice at Canalside."
Usually the canals are drained for the season around Labor Day. "We'll be draining them a little earlier (August 9) to get the roller rink opened by August 20. The ice at Canalside will open around it's normal time, Thanksgiving," said Moloney-Ford.
The rink will be the largest outdoor roller skating rink in New York State.
We'll have an admissions tent, you can bring your own skates or rent them for $4. "We ask that you only bring traditional roller skates, not inline skates."
The rink will be available for school groups, community organizations, even for birthday parties in conjunction with Explore and More.
Themed skate nights are planned. One of the themed-nights on a Friday will be a Disco night.
Adult admission is $6 and children 13 and younger will be $2.
Get ready to lace up and roll at Canalside,” said Erie Canal Harbor Development Chairman Robert Gioia. “For those around in the 70s at the height of the roller disco era, you know how much fun a pair of polyurethane wheels and good tunes can be, and roller skating is seeing a resurgence as a fun activity for all ages. We’re thrilled to bring this new attraction to the community on Buffalo’s waterfront.”
Canalside is enjoying a busier Summer than last year. "On a daily basis there is plenty to do. The carousel opened this Summer. Vendors will be on the boardwalk at least until Labor Day. You can rent a kayak, a water bike, or go on a boat tour or check out the Long Shed to learn about the history of the Erie Canal where they're building a packet boat." Maloney-Ford said in addition, there are lots of children's activities. "People are itching to get out and the waterfront is a great way to get back out there."
The roller rink is expected to remain open until October 31.
