US Decides to Keep Canada Border Closed Through August 21

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - The Department of Homeland Security announced Wednesday morning that the United States will continue to restrict the travel of individuals from Canada into the United States at land ports of entry along the border.

The announcement comes as a surprise, after Canada announced that they would open their border to vaccinated Americans on August 9. The border has been closed to all but 'essential' traffic since March of 2020.

"Today’s decision by the Biden administration harms economic recovery and hurts families all across America’s northern border, this is completely unnecessary," said Congressman Brian Higgins in a statement.

“While the United States does nothing, loved ones remain separated and communities whose economies rely on the cross-border exchange continue to suffer economically," Higgins said. "Continuation of this shutdown is illogical given the success of vaccines and counterproductive putting the United States at a disadvantage given Canada’s decision to welcome back vaccinated Americans effective August 9th.”
