NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A man was killed and another was hospitalized with non life-threatening injuries on Thursday morning after a boat they were in overturned and struck a dock outside a home on West Fire Island, the Suffolk County Police Department said.
Police said the incident happened around 7:35 a.m., on West Fire Island in Great South Bay. The area is known for having shallow water, so first responders walked into the water to get to the scene, instead of using boats.
The man who died was pronounced dead at the scene; the other man was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Officials said it was not clear which man was operating the boat at the time of the crash.
Two dogs were also on the boat, and they were uninjured, according to the Islip Fire Department.
