Emergency personnel responded to the drowning at a home on McKinley Street in Linden around 6 p.m.
The boy was pulled from the pool and attempts were made to revive him, according to Mayor Derek Armstead and Linden police.
The child was then transported Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, where he was pronounced dead, Armstead told NJ.com.
Armstead said it appears the boy was visiting his grandmother at the home.
“At this point, all we can do is give the family all our prayers and let them know that if we can help them, we’ll go forward with it,” the mayor said.
An investigation into the toddler's death is ongoing by police and the Union County Homicide Task Force.
