FAIRFIELD, Conn. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – Dozens of animals were rescued from a trash–filled hoarding house in Fairfield where dogs were covered in feces and cats were living in the walls, police said Tuesday.
In all, animal control removed 25 dogs and 22 cats last week from the “horrifying” squalor on Steep Hill Road.
Authorities caught wind of the issue on April 17, when a dog covered in waste wandered from the house and was spotted by a concerned resident.
Police investigated the report and uncovered the deplorable conditions.
All of the animals were found alive, but three of them had to be taken to a veterinary hospital, officials said.
Neighbor Tammy Champagne said it appears the family had good intentions but conditions spiraled from there.
“It’s sad,” Champagne said. “She tried to do the right thing, but it just got out of control I guess.”
Fairfield Police Chief Robert Kalamaras said the department is pursuing arrest warrants for animal cruelty in connection with the case.
“Pretty horrifying conditions,” the chief said. “One, for animals to be living in, but even worse off for people to be living in.”
Kalamaras noted that some of the cats had resorted to “living in the walls.”
A social worker is assisting the family as part of the investigation.
Meanwhile, police hope a judge will make the animals available for adoption.
