The incident occurred at Smith Point Beach around 10:15 a.m. where the lifeguard, 10-year veteran Zack Gallo, was participating in a training exercise, officials said.

As part of the training, Gallo was playing a victim who needed saving when he coincidentally became a victim.

Belloe said Gallo was bitten in the chest and had an injury to his hand but was able to walk out of the water unassisted.

According to Gallo, the shark was about four or five feet long and was spotted by other lifeguards after the incident. Gallo was taken to Southside Hospital for treatment where he is stable and doing well.

“We’ve never had an incident like this before,” Belloe said. “Hopefully this doesn’t happen again.”

Lifeguards and drones will be monitoring the beaches Monday when crowds are expected to return for the holiday.
