NORTH LONG BEACH, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A New Jersey man was charged with attempting to con an 88-year-old man out of $5,500 in Nassau County, police said Wednesday.
According to Nassau County Police, the victim had received a phone call stating his grandson had been in an accident and needed money.
The caller, later identified as Larry Urtarte, instructed the victim to put $5,500 in a package, label it “M2125,” and that a person named "Richard" wearing a brown hat would come to pick it up.
The 88-year-old confirmed that his grandson was not in an accident and contacted police.
Working with police, the victim handed a fake package to "Richard" when he asked for it. Detectives then pounced and tried to arrest Urtarte, who attempted to flee the scene and then resisted arrest while being handcuffed.
No injuries were reported, police said.
Urtarte is charged with with third-degree attempted grand larceny and for resisting arrest. He was later charged with fourth-degree grand larceny as well.
He will be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Wednesday.
