PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — The Port Washington community has rallied around a good cause thanks to a 16-year-old Schreiber High School student’s keen observation during a concert.
Lucas Milgrim, a saxophonist with the school's jazz ensemble, said he noticed something about the younger students during their concert.
"Sometimes you see kids wearing like white undershirts because we're required by school to wear a white shirt and a black pair of pants, so there are people that clearly aren't able to have the clothing that the school expects them to have," he said.
The teen had an idea: collect black pants and white shirts so the young students could look their best.
"Third, fourth and fifth grade kids are growing like incredibly fast," Milgrim said. "It doesn't make sense for people to have to be buying expensive clothing to wear it one time."
Donations poured in. Milgrim then approached his local dry cleaner.

Evan Markowitz at Country Cleaners provided laundry service. Free of charge.
"[It was an] incredible idea," Markowitz said. "He's a really fine young man. He spent a lot of time helping us, and it worked out well."
Now no one has to wear a t-shirt.
"It feels like the right thing," Milgrin said. "It feels like what we are supposed to do and I think doing what we as people can do to help anyone is the best way to live our lives."
