One of the more closely watched congressional races in the country is in the 2nd District in South Jersey.
It involves an incumbent who changed parties in the middle of his first term.
Jeff Van Drew rode the Democratic wave to victory two years ago, then during impeachment proceedings, pledged his loyalty to President Donald Trump.
The now-Republican candidate is running for re-election.
"Trump is really the dominant issue in this district and in virtually all congressional districts," Dworkin said.
Ben Dworkin, who heads the Public Policy Institute at Rowan University, calls Van Drew the most prominent congressional party flipper of the Trump era.
Van Drew's opponent is political newcomer Amy Kennedy, who is married to former U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy, son of the late Sen. Ted Kennedy. Dworkin said the Kennedy name still matters.
"It certainly brings her both national attention and national fundraising ability," Dworkin.
The district is seen as a bellwether.
A Monmouth University poll released last month found Kennedy leading Van Drew by five points among all registered voters.
Meanwhile, a hotly contested Central Jersey congressional race pits a one-term incumbent facing a well-known challenger in the 7th District.
The district was reliably Republican until two years ago when it was won by Democrat Tom Malinowski, a former State Department official.
Now the GOP is trying to take it back.
"Tom Kean Jr. is trying to thread a very small needle," Dworkin said, adding the minority leader of the New Jersey State Senate, who is the son of former New Jersey Governor Tom Kean, has edged closer to the president. "At the same time he doesn't want to upset those people who were Never Trumpers."
Malinowski is stressing bipartisanship and the nitty gritty of governing.
"With two years of incumbency under his belt he put a tremendous emphasis on constituent services," Dworkin said.
Malinowski lists COVID-19, the economy, and healthcare among the biggest issues this election.
Kean is running on a platform of fixing a broken health care system, creating jobs, preventing big tax hikes, protecting the environment and improving infrastructure.
