NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Four men were arrested after police seized 27 ghost guns from Queens residences, the Queens district attorney’s office announced Thursday.
Ghost guns are assembled at home and don’t have serial numbers, which means someone manufacturing one doesn’t need a license to it and it can’t be traced.
“We must get the guns off our streets. We must stop the illegal production of dangerous firearms that is happening in homes throughout our neighborhoods,” said Katz. “Using myriad investigative tools and working closely with our law enforcement partners, we will continue to pursue those who bring these illegal, deadly weapons into our communities.”
Alongside the ghost guns, officers found over 10,000 rounds of ammunition, gun accessories and over $50,000 in cash from the residences in Bayside and Flushing on Tuesday.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz charged Andrew Chang, Kai Zhao, Michael Frankenfeld and Seongwoo Chung with criminal possession of a weapon, criminal sale of a firearm and the unlawful possession of unfinished frames or receivers.
If convicted, Chang and Chung face up to 15 years in prison, whereas Frankenfeld and Zhao could face a maximum of 25 years in prison.
Ghost guns are increasingly popular in New York City.
"So far this year the NYPD as a whole is seeing a 325% increase in ghost guns recovered in the City of New York," said NYPD inspector Courtney Nilan.
