5 fatally shot over 4-hour span in NYC; victims include man killed outside home

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – At least five men were fatally shot over a span of about four hours overnight in the latest wave of gun violence to hit New York City this summer, police said Wednesday.

Three of the fatal shootings were in Brooklyn and two were in the Bronx, with all of them occurring between about 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. All of the victims were in their 20s or 30s.

The deadly gunplay started in Brooklyn around 9:15 p.m. Police responded to a 911 call about shots fired in front of a building at the Brownsville Houses on Blake Avenue.

When officers arrived, a 26-year-old man was lying unresponsive on the ground with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was rushed to Brookdale Hospital but did not survive.

About 90 minutes later in the Bronx, a 31-year-old man was shot at E. 234th Street and White Plains Road in the Wakefield section around 10:45 p.m.

The victim was seen lying unconscious with a gunshot wound to his torso. He was pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital.

Less than a half-hour later in Brooklyn, a 29-year-old man was shot in the left leg on Thomas Boyland Street, near Fulton Street, in Ocean Hill around 11:10 p.m.

The victim suffered life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital.

The bloodshed continued into early Tuesday morning, with a third shooting in Brooklyn around 12:30 a.m., when a 24-year-old man was shot at a residential building on Lincoln Avenue, near Fulton Street, in Cypress Hills.

The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the torso. He was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center.

A little over a half-hour later, a 34-year-old man was fatally shot in the Fordham Heights section of the Bronx just after 1 a.m.

Officers responding to a 911 call found the man lifeless outside the residential hotel where he lived on the Grand Concourse, near E. 183rd Street.

The victim suffered a mortal gunshot wound to the torso and was pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital. He was identified as Melquan Cooper.

No arrests have been reported in any of the shootings, police said as the investigations continue.

Despite spates of gun violence this summer, the NYPD said in its latest crime statistics report that shootings were down 24.2% across the five boroughs in June 2022 compared to June 2021. There were 165 shootings last June compared to 125 during the same month this year, police said.
