Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has sent more than 1,000 asylum seekers to New York since Aug. 5 as part of a spat with Mayor Eric Adams.
The mayor’s office said 237 people arrived on Wednesday, including families with children as young as three months old.
The asylum seekers were met by mutual aid groups like Grannies Respond, Team TLC, NYIC, Mizteca and Make the Road NY, who provided food, water, cellphones, medical aid and legal assistance.
City representatives were also present to bring migrants to homeless shelters and provide support.
Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine attended Wednesday’s arrival and later criticized Abbott’s stunt.
“I am truly appalled by how they have been treated prior to their arrival here. A number of the arrivals today needed medical attention, several were sent to the hospital — including a girl 3 months old,” wrote Levine on Twitter. It’s clear the migrants did not give their consent in any real way to be sent here.”
Levine said as many as 40% of the bussed migrants have family or close relations in other parts of the country, but were sent to New York City instead of having the option to stay with their support network.
The borough president also accused Texas of forcing the asylum seekers to sign NDAs to ensure New York City had tno advance warning of bus arrivals.
