NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A rescue team transported 55 dogs from Hurricane Ida-ravaged Louisiana to a Long Island animal shelter Monday, where they are now available for adoption.
The dogs and puppies were collected from six different shelters across the state for the four-day drive to the North Shore Animal League America in Port Washington.
The relocated pups include Lulu, a pregnant black lab who was on the brink of being euthanized, according to the shelter. The organization helped clear out the dogs from Louisiana shelters so that those spaces can welcome newly displaced pets from Ida.
“It’s a very stressful situation, so to see these animals make that change and really come around is just heartwarming and it makes it all worthwhile,” said Ted Moriates, the rescue team leader of the North Shore Animal League America, as he admired the dogs’ lifted spirits on Monday.

Sylvia Ottaka a senior director, at the no-kill shelter organization, said those looking to adopt a dog should act fast.
“These animals are absolutely adorable so I really think they’re going to get adopted very quick,” said Ottaka. “So if anyone’s ready to open up their home to adopt, this is the beast week to come in, as well as next week.”
The shelter expects to make more trips to and from Louisiana to drop off more supplies and estimates it will return with at least 100 more dogs.
