2 dead, 5 hurt after car mounts sidewalk in Brooklyn

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Two people were killed and five others were hurt after a red-light crash caused a car to jump a curb and continue onto a Brooklyn sidewalk Monday afternoon, police said.

The crash happened in Bensonhurst just before 1 p.m.

Police said the driver of the white Toyota Camry was allegedly speeding on 18th Avenue when he ran a red light and collided with a black SUV as it crossed 64th Street.

Both cars were severely damaged and spun out of control, with the sedan jumping a curb before striking and killing a pedestrian.

The driver of the Honda was killed, police said.

There were seven patients in total, according to the FDNY, including the two fatalities.

It's unclear whether the remaining victims were in the cars or on the sidewalk.

The Toyota driver is in the hospital and in police custody. Police are investigating whether or not he was under the influence.
