NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The fight against COVID-19 might have just hit a critical turning point.
Recently, Pfizer announced that its clinical trials on children between the ages of 5 and 11 proved that its vaccine was indeed “safe” to take. In the coming weeks, they’ll seek approval from the FDA and European regulators.
With that additional portion of the population anticipated to become vaccinated against the virus, we may very well be one step closer to herd immunity.
On this week’s episode of 880 In Depth, we underline the importance of getting kids vaccinated.
“I think until the children are vaccinated, we will continue to see school outbreaks,” Dr. Lawrence Kleinman tells WCBS 880.
Kleinman, who currently serves as the Vice Chair at the Department of Pediatrics at Rutgers’ Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center, is the sole guest of this week’s episode, but he offers much insight.
Through him we learn how giving the vaccine to children will help ease parental anxiety, as well as the impact it could have on mask mandates.
“It may be that [masks become] more of an option than a necessity,” Kleinman suggests.
We also get Kleinman’s opinion on the Delta variant. More specifically, he says its impact on children should expel the myth about how COVID has spared them. “Children are an important consideration when thinking about the management of this pandemic,” he adds.
