NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A 14-year-old boy was shot to death in an apartment lobby in the Bronx early Thursday, police said amid a report he may have been among a group of kids playing with a gun.

The victim, identified as Jacob Borbin, of the Bronx, was shot in the chest in the lobby of 237 E. 194th St. in Fordham Manor.

He was found outside on the street by officers responding to a call just after 1 a.m.

EMS rushed the teen to Saint Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Borbin lived in Allerton, about two miles away from the shooting scene.

It appears he and other boys may have been passing around a gun when it discharged and struck him in the chest, WABC reported.

The firearm has not been recovered.

His family insisted the shooting was an accident, but police would not confirm that and said the investigation is ongoing.

No arrests have been reported.

NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell tweeted that the department’s “detectives are working tirelessly to investigate the tragic shooting of a 14-year-old in the Bronx.”
