NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A 15-year-old boy was killed while subway surfing on Staten Island on Wednesday afternoon, officials said.
The teen was riding on top of a Staten Island Railway train around 1:15 p.m. when he struck his head on an overhead structure at the Eltingville station.
Video from the scene shows the side of the train car covered in blood as emergency responders try to save the boy's life.
He was pronounced dead at Staten Island University Hospital North.
The unidentified victim, who is reportedly a Tottenville High School student, is just the latest teen to die or be severely injured while riding atop a train.
"This was an awful situation that demonstrates again the deadly risk taken by anyone who attempts to subway surf," NYC Transit President Richard Davey said in a statement.
"Our hearts go out to loved ones who have senselessly lost a child and we continue to encourage teenagers find safer ways to seek thrills," Davey said.
In February, another 15-year-old boy was killed while riding atop a J train on the Williamsburg Bridge. He hit his head on part of the bridge and was pronounced dead near the Delancey Street/Essex Street station on the Lower East Side.
And in December, yet another 15-year-old boy was killed when he fell off a J train while subway surfing in Williamsburg and made contact with the electrified third rail.
Last August, a 15-year-old boy had his arm severed by an R train at a Jackson Heights station as he was attempting to subway surf. Weeks before that, a 15-year-old boy was critically injured after he struck his head while atop a train in North Corona.
