NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- An English teacher at Fordham Preparatory School is spending his free time on a coffee business for the benefit of addiction recovery.

Billy Magner’s Brainwashed Coffee Company donates 50% of all profits to Pro Recovery Power and Drug Crisis in Our Backyard — two recovery programs.

“It was a desire to be of service to others and help other people,” Magner told WCBS 880’s Sean Adams. “We’ve been given so much. I’ve been given so much specifically through a recovery community, that I wanted to give back to it. This is just a natural way. Coffee brings people together. Coffee is unifying.”

Brainwashed works with a Portchester roaster to combat the ongoing addiction and overdose crisis.

Overdose deaths rose dramatically during the pandemic from 70,630 in 2019 to over 100,000 in 2021.

Alongside coffee beans — ground or whole — Magner sells coffee soap, coffee candles and coffee hot sauce.
