NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A gunman opened fire in a Bronx deli early Tuesday morning, killing a man and injuring two bystanders, including a woman who was critically injured, police said as they charged a suspect with murder.
A 31-year-old who appeared to be a target of the triple shooting was pronounced dead at the scene, while the two bystanders—a man and woman, both 34 years old—were taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds.
Gunfire erupted around 12:45 a.m. following an argument at a popular deli near East Burnside and Jerome avenues in the Mt. Hope section, police said.
The shooter opened fire on the 31-year-old man during the dispute, striking him in the head and body and killing him, according to police. The deceased hasn't been identified.
Both bystanders were transported to St. Barnabas Hospital and are expected to survive. The man was shot in his left arm and listed in stable condition, while the woman was shot in her torso and listed in critical condition.
Police took a person of interest into custody around the time of the shooting. Hours later, police identified him as Edison Cruz, 25, of the Bronx.
Cruz was arrested and charged with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.
The shooting rattled the neighborhood, including one woman who said she’s a friend of the woman who’s in critical condition. She said she rushed to the deli but that her friend had already been taken to the hospital.
“I hope my friend is okay and she’s safe, that’s all I worry about. Because at the end of the day she has a daughter she has to go home to,” she said.
“You can’t even walk in the street with your kids anymore,” she added. “You can’t do anything, you know. It’s getting out of control now.”
