Mirzo Atadzhanov, a 32-year-old from Sheepshead Bay, admitted to killing renowned psychotherapist Dr. Jeremy Safran in the professor’s own basement, but claimed self defense.

Safran was discovered in his Prospect Park South home at around 6 p.m. on May 7, 2018 with multiple stab wounds, according to Gothamist. Police later found Atadzhanov hiding in Safran’s closet covered in blood.

EMS pronounced the professor dead at the scene.

“This defendant broke into the victim’s home and when confronted, senselessly stabbed him to death,” wrote Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. “Hopefully, today’s sentence brings a measure of solace to his heartbroken family. The defendant has now been held accountable for his actions.”
