AVON, Conn. (WCBS 880) — A Connecticut family is on high alert after a pair of bears broke into their home over the weekend.
Dustin Puhlaski, of Avon, told WFSB-TV that he came home on Saturday to his family’s home on Verville Road and found two bears inside.
"Come home to cook some dinner and noticed my back door is open and took a closer look and there was a bear right in my kitchen staring right at me," Puhlaski told the outlet.
The bears reportedly broke in through the back door of the home and also smashed through the living room window.
Once inside, the bears rummaged through kitchen cabinets, ate cupcakes that were made by Puhlaski’s daughter, some candy and ransacked the home, WFSB reported.
The Connecticut man says bears had come around his house before, but this was the first instance in which the predators had actually entered the home.
Now, Puhlaski tells WFSB that his family has taken additional security measures to be safe.
“I've got to make sure everything is locked up. We had to put a new alarm system overnight just to make sure he doesn’t come through our door while we’re sleeping,” he told the news station.
No one was home at the time of the incident, and no one was injured, according to the report.
The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was reportedly called in to investigate and told the father of four that the bears were not tagged – which is unusual for bears of that size.
WFSB reports the agency told the family that the bears would likely return.
