STAMFORD, Conn. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — For founder Ben Zachs, the goal of the Fine Fettle cannabis dispensary was to make it look like the opposite of a doctor's office.
"This is a beautiful space," he said. "It's warm. it's inviting. We've got glass display cases. We've got computers and a ton of register space."
Fine Fettle, which is tucked away in an industrial park in Stamford, is one of nine medical cannabis dispensaries that will soon welcome anyone 21 and over starting Tuesday.
In conjunction with the opening, Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont announced the expungement of more than 40,000 low-level pot offenses.
"At the end of the day, this is a retail store," Zachs, the chief operating officer, said. "But we are selling something more, and we're changing history around a plant and we are righting the wrongs of the past, and all of those things really matter."
Recreational sales are limited to a quarter-ounce of cannabis flower or its equivalent.
"We're asking people to have placed a pre-order and made an appointment, so when you come in, your order should be ready and waiting for you," he said.
With a much slower rollout underway in New York, Zachs hopes this shop can win over customers on the other side of the border as well.
This shop in particular could see a lot of traffic. It's just 20 minutes from the New York border.
"New York did just legalize, but there's one store in Manhattan," he added. "There's nothing in Westchester County. There's nothing in Duchess County. There's nothing in Rockland County. We do think we'll bring a lot of customers from our neighboring state."
