The newest building at the World Trade Center site is taking shape.
The Perelman Performing Arts Center, which will be located next to 1 World Trade Center, will add another element of culture to Lower Manhattan.
The steel frame has been completed for what will be become a glowing marble cube just north of the 9/11 memorial.
"This is truly a state of the art theater complex with theater automation," said center President Leslie Koch, who describes the facility as a smaller version of Lincoln Center.
Unlike the theaters there, this new center will be open all day.
"You can come in there and work and meet and have a drink and a snack, even enjoy a free performance," Koch said.
The high-tech center is built for the COVID-19 age.
Koch said it has flexibile seating configurations, state of the art ventilation and every feature of the bathroom is touchless.
The flexible space can be used as one larger theater or three smaller ones, and it will also be fully digital.
"We'll be able to deliver a performance to you wherever you are," Koch said.
Koch said they will host a wide variety events including plays, concerts, dance and spoken word.
Koch said this is the type of space the World Trade Center needs.
"Because arts are about the future and vitality of New York City," Koch said.
Construction was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and should be completed in 2022.
