NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The stifling heat continues to bake the Tri-State area.

On Monday, records were tied at both LaGuardia and Newark, where temperatures reached 96 degress and 99 degress, respectively.

There's no relief in sight Tuesday. It will be hot, sticky and uncomfortable with the heat index expected to climb above 100 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service, high temperatures are forecast to be a few degrees higher than Monday for most.

A heat advisory is in effect for the region along with an excessive heat warning for central and western New Jersey.

The scorching temperatures are not just brutally uncomfortable, but could also be dangerous.

Dr. Nora Tossounian, an internist at Hackensack Meridien Health, said it doesn't take long to run into trouble.

"It could be anywhere in between 15 into 30 minutes and it depends on the level of exertion," she said. "Usually patients might feel light-headed or dizzy, they might experience dry mouth, shortness of breath, having difficulty taking a deep breath."

Those with certain medical conditions are most at risk.

"For some patients, who again have cardiac conditions or who have lung conditions, like asthma, this type of breathing in this humid air can be very oppressive, thus warranting their need for their rescue inhalers," Tossounian said. "This is not something that one should say, 'I'll just work through it, it will pass.' Many times it doesn't and people do pass out and they have been known to in these situations."

She recommends drinking plenty of water and seeking shade.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is urging New Yorkers to limit outdoor activity and take action to prevent heat-related illnesses, especially those who are more vulnerable to heat, like children, seniors and those with respiratory conditions.

Cooling centers are open in New York City.

Three days of 90-degree temperatures will mark a technical heat wave, and it looks like a swath of the area will reach that threshold by Wednesday.

It will still be sticky and hot on Wednesday with sunshine and some clouds. An afternoon thunderstorm is possible inland. The high will be 92 with RealFeels again approaching 100 in the afternoon.

It cools down later in the workweek but remains humid with highs in the 80s on Thursday.
