BELLMAWR, N.J. (WCBS 880) — A New Jersey gym owner, who frequently defied the state’s COVID-19 restrictions in 2020, has become embattled in a new controversy for possibly incentivizing vaccination refusal, according to a report.
The Press of Atlantic City reports Ian Smith, co-owner of Atilis Gym in Bellmawr, has announced that his gym will be giving out free memberships to those who do not receive a COVID-19 vaccine.
According to a Tweet from Smith, the offer is a counter to Krispy Kreme's recent decision to give out free donuts to anyone who shows that they have been vaccinated against the virus.
"We believe in health — the real way — exercise, good diet, plenty of Vitamin D, Zinc, and an environment to destress," Smith wrote on social media.
During the early months of the pandemic, all health facilities and gyms were ordered to close in the state of New Jersey to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Atilis Gym infamously defied those orders when it reopened during the pandemic and refused to close their doors, despite orders from the state.
The Health Department stepped in to close the facility, citing plumbing issues.
A judge then imposed nearly $130,000 in fines against the gym owners for defying state restrictions.
According to the Press of Atlantic City, Smith was invited to speak at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando, Florida because of his defiance. On the flight back, the paper reports he refused to wear a mask and was subsequently banned from American Airlines. He will be permitted to fly with the airline when face masks are no longer required.
