NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A dog bit an NYPD officer in the head as he pursued a suspected gunman in Brooklyn on Sunday evening, police said.

The officer was bitten around 6:10 p.m. during the foot chase at Neptune Avenue and West 35th Street in Coney Island.

Police said the suspect fled into a home and two pit bulls ran out. One of them attacked the officer, biting him in his head.

A second officer opened fire, striking the pit bull, police said.

The injured officer was taken to NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn. His injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.

The second officer suffered minor injuries and was taken to Coney Island Hospital.

Police said the dog was believed to be alive as of early Monday.

The suspect remains at large. Police believed he was armed with a gun, although it's unclear exactly what led to the pursuit.
