NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- Officials are investigating the discovery of a human hand at a state forest on Staten Island, police said Friday.

The hand was discovered around 2:40 p.m. Thursday by a 42-year-old man walking his dog near Amboy and Cunningham roads in Pleasant Plains.

The area sits at the entrance to North Mount Loretto State Forest, a 200-acre wooded area on the South Shore.

The man called 911 after his dog came upon the body part while sniffing around.

Officials from the medical examiner’s office responded to the scene and recovered the hand.

The medical examiner will try to determine who the hand belonged to as police try to find the rest of the remains.

Police blocked off the entrance to the parking lot of the state forest on Friday.

“What! Found a human hand?” said Jackie Graziano, who owns the Hollywood Garage, an auto repair shop down the street.

He said it’s usually uneventful in the area, so it was startling to see cops around Thursday and again on Friday.

“This is a great neighborhood, this is like Andy of Mayberry,” he said.
