NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- An Ex-NYPD cop was sentenced Friday in the fatal shooting of his friend and next-door neighbor in 2019 that officials said he avoided responsibility and accountability for.

Martinson Afari Yeboah, 30, was sentenced to one to three years in prison on second-degree manslaughter charges. He formerly served Housing Police Service Area 7 in the Bronx.
“The defendant, who had been a NYPD Police Officer for approximately one year, initially told investigators the victim was playing with the firearm and accidentally shot himself,” said Bronx DA Darcel Clark. “However, an autopsy showed the gunshot was not self-inflicted. Additionally, the defendant did not perform life-saving measures. His actions were reckless and inconsiderate.”
According to an investigation, Yeboah, 30, was off-duty in an apartment building with the victim, Frederick Afoakwah, 21, on West Mosholu Parkway South on April 20, 2019.
While Yeboah was playing video games, his off-duty gun, a 9mm semi-auto pistol, went off, hitting Afoakwah in the neck, Clark said.
The victim’s dad and cousin came into the room after the shot went off, and saw Afoakwah on the ground. Yeboah apparently told them it was an accident, and didn’t call 911 until Afoakwah’s dad urged him to.
Officials said Yeboah went to his apartment, left his gun there and changed his shoes instead of helping in saving his friend’s life. He then waited in the lobby for first responders.
Afoakwah was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Yeboah was fired from the NYPD shortly after the incident. He pleaded guilty on manslaughter charges.
