Flaming DOT truck explodes in Long Island City

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A city work truck caught fire and exploded in Long Island City on Wednesday, sending bystanders running for cover.

The Department of Transportation truck caught fire around 1 p.m. at Vernon Boulevard and 47th Avenue.

Four DOT employees working pothole repairs were on their lunch break when they noticed their truck smoking and then catching fire, sources said.

Raging flames soon engulfed the vehicle, sending a plume of smoke over the neighborhood.

Video obtained by WABC shows the truck exploding feet away from an FDNY member.

Businesses in the area were reportedly evacuated after the explosion.

No serious injuries were reported.

In a statement, the DOT said, "Safety of our employees and others is a top priority and we will investigate today’s truck fire."

No potential cause of the fire has been released by officials.
