NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Charges against a 29-year-old former corrections officer at Rikers Island for taking bribes in exchange for smuggling drugs and other contraband into the prison were unsealed on Friday, according to the Department of Justice.

Between February and June 2019, Karin Robinson allegedly took thousands of dollars in bribes from a person incarcerated at the prison to bring cannabis and other contraband into the prison.

The inmate then sold the contraband to other prisoners, according to officials.

“The corruption of correction officers undermines the orderly running of the institution and endangers the safety of other incarcerated individuals and Department of Correction personnel,” stated U.S. Attorney Breon Peace. “We will continue to prosecute those who enrich themselves instead of serving the public and work with our federal and local law enforcement partners to stop the flow of illegal narcotics and other contraband into correctional facilities.”

Prosecutors charged Robinson with violation of the Travel Act and conspiracy to distribute controlled substances to an inmate.
