NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Funeral arrangements were announced on Saturday for Jason Rivera, the 22-year-old NYPD officer who was killed while responding to a call about a domestic dispute on Friday.
Services will take place on Jan. 27 and 28 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan, beginning with a wake on Thursday from 1-8 p.m. followed by a 9 a.m. funeral on Friday.
Rivera’s partner, 27-year-old Wilbert Mora, remains in critical condition from injuries sustained during the deadly encounter with alleged shooter Lashawn McNeil. He was transferred to NYU Langone Hospital from Harlem Hospital on Sunday.
Rivera had only been a part of the NYPD for 14 months, joining the 32nd Precinct in November of 2020 after a lifelong dream to be a police officer was realized.
The uptown Manhattan native leaves behind a wife and child for whom the NY Police and Fire Widows' & Children's Benefit Fund, also known as “Answer the Call”, announced on Saturday would be providing an immediate $25,000. A public fundraiser for the two officers has also garnered close to $200,000 more.
Members of the public were also urged to attend Rivera’s funeral by Pat Lynch, president of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, as an act of solidarity with the NYPD.
“The public has to send a message to anyone that dares to harm a New York City police officer,” Lynch said at a Friday press conference. “Not here, not now, not today, not to us. We are humbly asking you to come out and help us.”
