NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – A fundraiser has been set up for a beloved member of the Mets family—a longtime security worker who died from COVID-19.
A funeral will be held Thursday for Sean Dean, 52, who contracted the virus in December and died on Saturday.
Jay Horwitz, the Mets’ vice president of alumni relations, remembered his friend as a sunny and selfless presence during his 16 years with the Mets.
“He always came to work with a smile on his face. And he was just a very caring kind of guy,” Horwitz said.
Horwitz said Dean was devoted to his wife, Melissa, and two young daughters.
“He was a family guy. He loved his family. He loved the Mets. And was just, you know, one of a kind,” he said.
Horwitz remembered when Dean wanted to marry his then-girlfriend Melissa. He enlisted Mets third baseman David Wright.
“They did the proposal on the field. David helped arrange the proposal. And he proposed at Shea Stadium,” Horwitz said.
Dean’s whole family contracted COVID.
“His daughters, his wife recovered. Unfortunately, Sean wasn’t able to recover. He battled and battled and battled,” Horwitz said.
Horwitz has set up a GoFundMe page to help secure the family’s future.
“Now’s the chance to give back, to help his kids maybe go to college, do stuff later on when they grow up,” Horwitz said.
