NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A group of gun owners are suing the NYPD, claiming the process for obtaining a gun license is overly arduous and delays to approval are a violation of constitutional rights.
The lawsuit is seeking a federal monitor to speed the process along as well as unspecified damages.
“They have shown time and again that they will infringe on the rights of gun owners and this court has a duty to stop this infringement,” the lawsuit said.
The Supreme Court overturned a century old New York law that limited concealed carry licenses last year.
The change ushered in an increase in applications for gun licenses — from about 4,700 applications in 2021 to roughly 7,400 in 2022.
It’s unclear how many of the recent applications have been addressed or approved.
State law requires the NYPD approve or deny applications within six months, but some of the plaintiffs claim delays of over a year.
The lawsuit argues the delays violate the plaintiffs Second and Fourteenth amendment rights.
